Supporting our Supporters

Climb greatly values those who offer to help our work.  The team will answer any query from how to despatch a cheque or deposit a donation, to registering as a collecting box holder or taking out membership.

Membership

Why is membership so important to Climb.  Read on

Friends of Climb

This scheme invites supporters to share their time and skills with Climb as often or infrequently as they wish.  It offers many different volunteering opportunities including Head Office support, marketing, translating, researching, speaking, befriending and fundraising.  Each Friend receives a welcome pack and regular newsletter called Between Friends.

Galaxy Tribute Funds

This method of Supporting Climb enables you to raise funds in the name of someone special to you.  The Development Team offers guidance throughout the project, monitors progress and allocates the special award you receive at the three stages of the Fund.  See the Galaxy Tribute page for more information.

Fundraising Activities

Climb relies on the numerous ways in which supporters raise funds.  We do have an excellent fundraising pack full of guidance and ideas.  Our Diary of Events helps our fundraisers to be supported by members in their locality.  Events that occur regularly across the country include raffles, coffee mornings, stalls, craft sales, participants in Fun and Big Runs, employees nominating Climb as their charity of the year, collections in lieu of presents, Christmas and other show collections, sponsored walks/swims.  More unusual events include sponsored bike rides from coast to coast or across the Pyrenees or climbing Ben Nevis and Kilimanjaro.  In each case Climb can provide valuable information, advice (both legal and practical) and promotional material.  Don’t forget the life of a fundraiser becomes much easier if supporters are encouraged to donate online  (via justgiving) to your own personalised fundraising page or as a straightforward donation via paypal, or through our website www.climb.org.uk.

Co-ordination of Events

Many events require communication between those hosting the event, those volunteering to help at it, those offering to attend/support it and perhaps the council/store or community hall in which the event is being held.  We can liaise between all parties to ensure all requirements are in place, including licences, posters, tickets and press releases.

Trusts and Companies

These are a major source of funding though national surveys show the level of such donations is falling.  The tendency is that personal links and contacts always make a difference and have more positive results.  It would really help Climb if those of you who have connections with Trusts or companies could make the first step and introduce the charity’s work through your personal connection.  Employers can always match donations £4£ and if your company is registered with a payroll giving agency, you can join our Give As you Earn scheme where any donation you choose to give is deducted before income tax.  Please tell the team of your plans.

Collecting Boxes

These are issued and monitored by the Development Team who provide you with all you need to make this method of supporting our charity as easy as possible.

Promotion

Selling the cause is an essential part of any successful fundraising project or event.  The Climb Development team has several resources available to help with this including leaflets and power point presentations which can be tailored to your specific needs, and, subject to commitments, a speaker from the charity can also offer support.  Also we welcome the chance to share your successful methods and events with our supporters through our publications and future workshops.

Publications

Each Climb Team contributes to our publications but it is the job of the Development Team to issue them to the right market in a timely manner.  Climb Update is published three times a year and is a mix between information about the charity, latest research and developments in the metabolic world, family profiles and fundraising reports.  Our twice yearly newsletter provides short updates to members between issues of Climb Update while Between Friends is exclusively for our Friends of Climb.

Developing Events

Examples of events undertaken to support Climb are given in “Fundraising”.  If you have an idea you would like us to develop with you into a workable project, please do get in touch.  Recent “new” events completed by the team at HQ have been a Fashion Show, a Celebrity Football Match and a Ladder Climb4Climb by Cheshire Fire Service.

Working with Your Local Community

Linking the Climb cause with your local community provides a strong base of support for whichever event you are planning.  This is shown by the popularity of the Galaxy Tribute Fund, potential supporters and donors can identify with the individual named in the Tribute and feel more personally involved.  Linking with your local shops, community and emergency services is also beneficial.  The Development Team can also advise on handling the local media to promote your event.

Conferences, Workshops, Meetings and Special Events

National Conferences are a mix of medical experts in the field of metabolic diseases sharing their experience and any new knowledge with an audience made up of families, and interested professionals.  Activities are arranged for children and young people alongside the main programme.

Workshops may be part of the conference or be run individually at other times.  New topics are currently being considered.

Meetings/seminars may focus on a single disease topic, education and training of non-specialists or to provide further support to Friends of Climb.

Special Events include the Service of Celebration and Songs of Praise.  The Development Team does initial research into potential locations for any of the above, promotes the event and registers attendance.

The Development Team is part of the administrative arm of the charity.  The above describes some of the functions for which it has special responsibility.
